This article establishes procedures for Laboratory testing, approving and reporting of admixtures intended for use in portland cement concrete. Refer to Sec 1054 for MoDOT’s specifications.

1054.3.1 Procedure

Laboratory prequalification of an admixture will be based on the following procedure:

(a) The manufacturer shall submit a one-quart (liter) sample of the admixture to the Division Engineer, Materials. This sample must be accompanied by a manufacturer's certification and guarantee that fully complies with the requirements of the specifications.
(b) The sample shall be subject to the following Laboratory tests:
pH--AASHTO T200
Specific Gravity (25°C/25°C)--ASTM D1429, Method A - Pycnometer
Non Volatile, percent:
Air-entraining Agents--ASTM D2369;
Retarding Agents, Water Reducing Agents,
and Accelerators--AASHTO M194, Section 18.2.
Infrared Spectrum
(c) Upon completion of Laboratory tests and a review of the manufacturer's certification and guarantee, the manufacturer will be notified by letter whether the admixture is prequalified for use. Each prequalified brand, with the manufacturer's name and address, will be placed on the appropriate list of prequalified material contained in EPG 1054 Concrete Admixtures.

Destination samples submitted to the Laboratory in accordance with instructions set forth in EPG 1054 Concrete Admixtures shall be tested by the methods set forth in the above paragraph.

All test data and calculations shall be recorded in Laboratory workbooks. Test results shall then be recorded through SiteManager.

1054.3.2 Sample Record

The sample record shall be completed in SiteManager, as described in Sample Record General Information , and shall indicate acceptance, qualified acceptance, or rejection. Appropriate remarks, as described in EPG 106.20 Reporting, are to be included in the remarks to clarify conditions of acceptance or rejection. Test results shall be reported on the appropriate templates under the Tests tab.
