Shoulders that have been constructed over the years vary in width, material, thickness, etc., often withing the same section of roadway. The task of maintaining shoulders requires a variety of methods, as shown in the following planning guides.
Repair Sod and/or Aggregate Shoulders and Approaches

Definition
The time and expenses incurred to expand installation and maintenance of asphalt concrete and aggregate roadway shoulder, approaches and clear zones. Includes cost for maintaining sod.
Purpose
To remove ruts, low areas, and high spots on sod and aggregate shoulders.

Recommended Material
- Aggregate
- Cold Mix
- Liquid Asphalt
- Rotomillings

Recommended Procedure
1. Place traffic control devices as needed.
2. blade or disc shoulder, or blade approach.
3. Shoot liquid asphalt, if eneded.
4. Place material, if needed.
5. Roll
6. Repeat as necessary to obtain desired height.
7. Broom as needed; clean up work zone.
8. Reseed sod shoulders.
9. Remove traffic control devices.
Safety
Exercise caution when rolling near shoulder edge. Refer to Policies, Rules & Regulations - Employee Handbook.
Other Considerations
Commercial approaches are maintained to normal shoulder line or 10 ft., whichever is less. Side road and private approaches are maintained to normal R/W line.
