Current General Services Specifications (MGS) By Subject

This article establishes procedures for inspecting, accepting and reporting of protective coating for concrete bents and piers (urethane and epoxy), concrete and masonry protective systems, sacrificial graffiti protection system and temporary coating for concrete bents and piers (weathering steel). Refer to Sec 1059 for MoDOT’s specifications.

For Laboratory testing and sample reporting procedures, refer to 1059.4 Laboratory Testing Guidelines for Sec 1059.

1059.1 Apparatus

Appropriate sampling thief and sample cans.

1059.2 Procedure

1059.2.1 Qualified Lists

Lists of qualified manufacturers and brand names of protective coating for concrete bents and piers (urethane and epoxy), concrete and masonry protective systems, sacrificial graffiti protection system and temporary coating for concrete bents and piers (weathering steel) is maintained by Construction and Materials. These lists are Tables 1059.2.1, 1059.2.2, 1059.2.3, 1059.2.4 and 1059.2.5.

Following the testing and evaluation, satisfactory products will be placed on the list of Sacrificial Graffiti Protection Systems. Field approval of this system is also required as detailed in Specification Sec 1059.40.4.

Following the testing and evaluation, satisfactory products will be placed on the list of Qualified Temporary Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (Weathering Steel).

1059.2.2 Basis of Acceptance

1059.2.2.1 Acceptance of Protective Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (urethane), Protective Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (epoxy) and Temporary Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (weathering steel)

Material on the list of qualified Protective Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (urethane), Protective Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (epoxy) and Temporary Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (weathering steel) may be accepted on the basis of manufacturer's certification and random sampling and testing, when deemed necessary. The manufacturer's certification is to be furnished to the receiving district and is to certify that the material supplied is the same composition as originally qualified.

1059.2.2.2 Acceptance of Concrete and Masonry Protective Systems

Material on the list of qualified Concrete and Masonry Protective Systems may be accepted on the basis of manufacturer's certification and random sampling and testing, when deemed necessary. The manufacturer's certification is to be furnished to the receiving district and is to certify that the material supplied is the same composition as originally qualified. This material also requires field approval in accordance with Sec 1059.30.4.

1059.2.2.3 Acceptance of Sacrificial Graffiti Protection Systems

Material on the list of qualified Sacrificial Graffiti Protection Systems may be accepted on the basis of manufacturer's certification and random sampling and testing, when deemed necessary. The manufacturer's certification is to be furnished to the receiving district and is to certify that the material supplied is the same composition as originally qualified. This material also requires field approval in accordance with Sec 1059.40.4.

1059.2.3 Sampling of Protective Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (urethane), Protective Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (epoxy), Concrete and Masonry Protective Systems, Sacrificial Graffiti Protection Systems and Temporary Coating for Concrete Bents and Piers (weathering steel)

Take samples any time the certification indicates test results approaching the specification limits or any time that conditions warrant additional inspection. When samples are taken, the sample size is 1 qt. (1 liter) in a screw top can. Use SiteManager and include complete information as to brand name and lot or batch number. The manufacturer's certification for the lot sampled is retained in the district office.

1059.3 Report

If the material is accepted in the field, it is reported through SiteManager. The form should show all pertinent information regarding the material and the certification is retained in the district office. The report is to indicate acceptance, qualified acceptance, or rejection. Appropriate remarks, as described in 106.9 Reporting Test Results, are to be included in the report to clarify conditions of acceptance or rejection.
