This article establishes procedures for inspection, acceptance and reporting of slotted drains. It provides the material inspection guidelines for Sec 1051.

Apparatus

(a) Magnetic gauge, reading range 0-40 mils (0-1000 m).
(b) Micrometer capable of measuring to 0.0001 in. (0.00254 mm) and accurate to within at least 0.001 in. (0.0254 mm).
(c) Rule with suitable graduations to accurately measure the material to be inspected.

Procedure

Pipe. The portion of the slotted drain shall be inspected in accordance with EPG 1020 Corrugated Metallic-Coated Steel Culvert Pipe,Pipe-Arches and End Sections.

Slotted Drain Grate Assembly. The grate assembly shall be inspected for compliance with Sec 1051.

Report

Inspection reports of slotted drains shall be made through AASHTOWARE Project (AWP). The report is to indicate acceptance or rejection. If the report indicates rejection, the reason for rejection shall be stated in the Free Form test. If the report indicates acceptance, the basis of acceptance of the metal, except when based exclusively on results of Laboratory tests, shall be stated in Free Form test as follows:

"Based on the approved brand and an examination of the material, we believe the material conforms to the requirements of the specifications. Fabrication is satisfactory. Material represented accepted."

Random spot-checking for weight of coating or thickness, visual examination of helical lock seams or weld seams and tension testing of lock seams performed by the manufacturer is to be recorded in the inspector's diary and need not be recorded on the inspection report.
