The First sentence in 106.4.2.6 should be modified to allow for the Contractor/Supplier to calibrate the equipment. Recomened working is shown below. See supporting data below:

Current wording:
"106.4.2.6 Bituminous distributors. The calibration of all distributors will be performed by district Construction and Materials personnel."

Proposed wording:
"106.4.2.6 Bituminous distributors. The calibration of all distributors will be approved by the engineer prior to use."

Dennis and I were thinking the same thing. That is that the distributor needs to be calibrated but not necessarily by us. As with the plants, the contractor should have the calibration performed and have it available for our inspection.
Subject:	Distributor Calibration Question

I thought we had direction awhile ago not to perform distributor calibrations anymore?
I received a request for the old forms we used when we were calibrating them, and followed up with checking the EPG and Spec book.

136.11.20 Acceptance of Small Quantities of Material on Federal-Aid Projects
The guidelines below may be used to reduce the amount of engineering control and sampling and testing for relatively small quantities of materials. These guidelines are intended for use on materials that will not adversely effect the traffic-carrying capacity of the completed facility and are not to be used for concrete in major structures, permanent mainline or ramp pavements, or other structurally critical items.
